What is a Doula?
The word doula in ancient greek means woman servant. The role of a birth doula is to support a woman during pregnancy, labour and birth on an emotional, physical, informational and in many ways a spiritual level during this sacred rite of passage. Holding space while providing support, on whatever level is needed, is key for a woman to feel safe, undisturbed and protected as she drops into herself. This facilitates her connecting and listening to her own instincts and body wisdom.
What about my birth partner?
Dads or birth partners can often feel worried that they will be excluded if a woman seeks the services of a doula. The role of the doula is primarily to support the woman, however they also provide support and champion the birth partner to give them confidence in supporting the woman. It also allows them to take a break if needed to eat or rest and ensure Mom gets continual one to one support.
